An African Grey Timneh is a smaller version of the African Grey
Congo (nine to eleven inches from beak to tail). Their feathers are
also a darker grey and they have a maroon tail, as opposed to the Congo's
bright red tail. Their eyes start out being dark grey or black and lighten,
as they age, to their final color of light yellow. Another distinguishing
feature of the Timneh is its lighter beak color on the top. The Congo
has an entirely black beak. Timnehs come from Central Africa and have
an average lifespan is about 60 years. Greys are excellent
mimics, and many (though not all) are excellent talkers, with a capacity
of over 2000 words. Even those that don't repeat words are very adept
at repeating household noises such as the telephone or doorbell, often
well enough to confuse their owners! Most greys have a large collection
of sounds they repeat.
Avery is a nut! His favorite activities are tearing up paper and terrorizing
our cockatiels. He very much enjoys being scritched and will lower his
head all the way down (like he's standing on his head) if you ask him
if he wants to be tickled - cause he does!
Avery was a Mother's Day gift for Erin in 2007. He was hand picked
from a breeder in Wylie Texas and we brought him home in June when he
was 8 weeks old. We weaned him at 14 weeks and he began a full-time
diet of Zupreme pellets, nuts, fresh fruits & veggies, pasta, and
grains.
He began making sounds and talking at about 10 months of age and also
shows a talent for escaping from any situation. You cannot keep him
in a cage as he will unscrew, unlatch and unlock everything and you
will find him calmly sitting on top of his sleep cage when you go to
wake him in the mornings!
Unlike most Greys, Avery loves to be cuddled and petted. He is like
a Cockatoo in that regard. He shares a large 150 Sq. ft. bird room with
Clover & Simone where he spends his entire day. At night he sleeps
in his cage 40" x 32" x 40". Avery also shares a large
outdoor aviary ( 9' wide x 16' long x 12' high) with Clover & Simone
in nice weather.
