One of the large macaws, the average Blue and Gold Macaw measures between 32 and 35 inches long, including their tail, with a three and a half foot wingspan. They usually weigh between 900 and 1200 grams.
Simone is on the small side for a Blue & Gold and weighs in at 850 grams. When Simone was born she had some problems with her crop and did not eat well. She stayed on 3 plus feedings a day until the end of September - which is normally when a Blue & Gold born in May would be weaning. We visited her daily when she was born and were able to bring her home mid-August. She attached to her pink bear when she was a baby and would cuddle it every night as she fell asleep.
She weaned fully in late November and began a full-time diet of Zupreme pellets, nuts, fresh fruits & veggies, pasta, grains....and ....Diet Coke! Yes! She will tear you up to get her Diet Coke. Her first word was "Hello"...her second..."Diet Coke!" And "Diet Coke" is all we ever hear now. If she sees you with it you have to share...she will chase you down to get it!
Simone loves to play - and she loves to be cuddled. Her best friend is our Blue Fronted Amazon Clover. They hang out together constantly - and would sleep together if we would let them. She sleeps in a large cage - 40" x 32" x 68" at night and plays hard in the bird room during the day. She enjoys spending time outdoors in the aviary, car rides, walking around the park, and french kisses!
